Once you consider size, budget, and how many cups of coffee you’ll be making every day, finding the perfect machine for you and your household can be simple. Here’s a buying guide for making sure your morning always has the perfect cup of joe.
Types of Coffee Machines
Coffee machines come in a variety of makes and models. Here’s a breakdown of what each kind can do for you.
Pod Coffee Makers: A pod coffee maker is a coffee maker that uses pre-made coffee pods for brewing. The pods contain micro-ground coffee beans and a little filter that you plug into your specialized machine to make a single cup of coffee. These machines, like Keurigs and Vues, can only use the pods designed for their machines. It works by pressure; hot water is forced through the coffee grounds and into your cup, brewing a super fast cup of coffee.
Drip Coffee Machines: These machines, like pod machines, use pressurized water pressed through grounds to make coffee. The grounds are usually put into a filter and the hot water pours over the top, dripping into a glass carafe underneath. This is the most common kind of coffee makers; they have been around for decades.
Pour Over Coffee Makers: Pour over coffee makers aren’t machines. They are usually ceramic or glass, and they cradle a filter full of beans. pour over makers use gravity and slower speeds to help get the most out of every ground of coffee. They are usually cone-shaped and sit right on top of your mug, dripping delicious coffee into your mug drip by drip.
French Press: A French press is a coffee maker that brews coffee inside of a glass cylinder. The grounds and water and put inside, slow brewed, then the coffee is forcibly separated by pressing a plunger down to push the grounds to the bottom and let the newly brewed coffee on top to pour into your mug.
Percolators: This old-school version of your regular coffee maker requires the use of a stove. Coarsely ground coffee grounds are put into the top, then the water is poured over top. The percolator heats up over the stove, making some delicious, slow-roasted coffee.

Best Rated Coffee Maker
10 cup Velocity Brew
The 10 cup Velocity Brew works impressively fast. It only takes around 3 minutes for it to brew a lot of coffee, anywhere between 4 to 10 cups depending on my preference. This lets me get my coffee and get back to my morning routine quickly which I appreciate.
The 10 cup Velocity Brew uses a sturdy glass carafe, a warming plate that is made out of porcelain and a convenient lighted on and off switch that makes this black and silver-toned machine nice to look at.
Delivers Great Flavor
Because the 10 cup Velocity Brew takes advantage of a unique sprayer head to dispense my coffee evenly, I have never had to worry about the flavor of the coffee that it produces, as each cup is extracted perfectly.
Some other coffee makers I have tried seem to have a hard time keeping my coffee at a good temperature, so the fact that the 10 cup Velocity Brew uses its internal, durable stainless steel hot water tank to keep my water heated to the perfect temperature of 200 degrees Fahrenheit is most certainly appreciated.
Pros of the 10 cup Velocity Brew:
- Fast brewing of up to 10 cups
- Heats water to the optimum temperature of 200 degrees Fahrenheit
- Unique spray head functionality for perfect flavor extraction
- Well built and handsome design
Downsides of the 10 cup Velocity Brew:
Spilling. Some of the online reviews of the 10 cup Velocity Brew that I have read stated that they spilled the coffee when pouring, but I found that the lip of the carafe is designed in such a way that it prevents that from happening. If you pour slowly as you would from any other carafe you should be fine.

Commercial VS. Home Use
What level of coffee maker do you need? Depending on how many cups of coffee you make at your home or office, you may need to look for a commercial, rather than a home use coffee maker. Almost all differences between the big, commercial machines and one you would use for your home is volume of java brewing every day.
Commercial: Commercial machines are made to make large quantities of coffee. If you need a hard-working machine that makes more than 10 cups at a time or makes more than 100 cups of coffee a day, you’ll need a commercial-grade coffee maker.
Home use: Home use coffee makers are designed to make 10 cups of coffee or less and also are designed to make less than 100 cups a day. They are designed to be used in small offices and in your home.
How much should I spend on my coffee maker? Depends on what features you are looking for!

Mid-Range Machines: $50 – $100. These feature everything a basic model does, but most are fully programmable. Also, they may include things like permanent filters and other great features.
High-End Machines: $100 and up. Some of these machines do amazing things! The brew quality on these machines will be better, and they are more likely to have some amazing features, like multiple pots and carafe options and sizes. Some even feature espresso brewers. Included in this category are all of the commercial models as well.

Coffe Makers F.A.Q
Here are some frequently asked questions or concerns you may have before purchasing a machine for your very own:
How do I know which type of coffee maker is best for me? Choosing the right kind of coffee maker is important. It’s best to figure out which features are most important and go from there. Do you want your coffee maker to be fast? Do you want it to be flexible? Programmable? Do you want to purchase pods for your machine? How much do you want to spend? Once you answer these questions, the right machine will usually be pretty obvious.
What accessories will I need for my new coffee maker? If you have a coffee brewer that is not a pod brewer, you’ll need filters most likely. However, I would also suggest the purchase of a new grinder if your machine needs beans. There’s nothing better than freshly ground and freshly brewed quality coffee.
Where can I buy pods? Depending on what brand of pod brewer you own, you’ll have to check out the availability of the pods. While most Keurig pods are available almost anywhere, Starbucks Pods and Nescafe pods might be a little harder to find. Make sure to check out the availability of the pods before you make your purchase.
