Overview of the best coffee maker in 2017

Types of Coffee Machines

The best coffee makers come in a variety of models. Here’s a breakdown of what each kind can do for you.

Pod Coffee Makers: A pod coffee maker is a coffee maker that uses pre-made coffee pods for brewing. The pods contain micro-ground coffee beans and a little filter that you plug into your specialized machine to make a single cup of coffee. These machines, like Keurigs and Vues, can only use the pods designed for their machines. It works by pressure; hot water is forced through the coffee grounds and into your cup, brewing a super fast cup of coffee.

Drip Coffee Machines: These machines, like pod machines, use pressurized water pressed through grounds to make coffee. The grounds are usually put into a filter and the hot water pours over the top, dripping into a glass carafe underneath. This is the most common kind of coffee makers; they have been around for decades.

Pour Over Coffee Makers: Pour over coffee makers aren’t machines. They are usually ceramic or glass, and they cradle a filter full of beans. pour over makers use gravity and slower speeds to help get the most out of every ground of coffee. They are usually cone-shaped and sit right on top of your mug, dripping delicious coffee into your mug drip by drip.

French Press: A French press is a coffee maker that brews coffee inside of a glass cylinder. The grounds and water and put inside, slow brewed, then the coffee is forcibly separated by pressing a plunger down to push the grounds to the bottom and let the newly brewed coffee on top to pour into your mug.

Percolators: This old-school version of your regular coffee maker requires the use of a stove. Coarsely ground coffee grounds are put into the top, then the water is poured over top. The percolator heats up over the stove, making some delicious, slow-roasted coffee.

Perfect Temperatures

Some other coffee makers I have tried seem to have a hard time keeping my coffee at a good temperature, so the fact that the 10 cup Velocity Brew uses its internal, durable stainless steel hot water tank to keep my water heated to the perfect temperature of 200 degrees Fahrenheit is most certainly appreciated.

Pros of the 10 cup Velocity Brew:

If you pour slowly as you would from any other carafe you should be fine.

Commercial VS. Home Use

What level of coffee maker do you need? Depending on how many cups of coffee you make at your home or office, you may need to look for a commercial, rather than a home use coffee maker. Almost all differences between the big, commercial machines and one you would use for your home is volume of java brewing every day.

Commercial: Commercial machines are made to make large quantities of coffee. If you need a hard-working machine that makes more than 10 cups at a time or makes more than 100 cups of coffee a day, you’ll need a commercial-grade coffee maker.

Home use: Home use coffee makers are designed to make 10 cups of coffee or less and also are designed to make less than 100 cups a day. They are designed to be used in small offices and in your home.

Best Coffee Machine Brands

Want to know a little more about who is making your coffee maker? Here are the brands we mentioned:

Keurig: Found in 1990, Keurig is a new, innovative company with loads of ideas. These guys came out with the first pod brewing systems and made pods cool. Headquartered right here in the US in Vermont, it was acquired by the Green Mountain Coffee Company in 2006.

They now also produce all Craftsmen tools. They also make an amazing array of home appliances, including some stellar coffee machines.

Coffe Makers F.A.Q

Here are some frequently asked questions or concerns you may have before purchasing a machine for your very own:

How do I know which type of coffee maker is best for me? Choosing the best coffee maker for you needs is important. It’s best to figure out which features are most important and go from there. Do you want your coffee maker to be fast? Do you want it to be flexible? Programmable? Do you want to purchase pods for your machine? How much do you want to spend? Once you answer these questions, the right machine will usually be pretty obvious.

What accessories will I need for my new coffee maker? If you have a coffee brewer that is not a pod brewer, you’ll need filters most likely. However, I would also suggest the purchase of a new grinder if your machine needs beans. There’s nothing better than freshly ground and freshly brewed quality coffee.

Where can I buy pods? Depending on what brand of pod brewer you own, you’ll have to check out the availability of the pods. While most Keurig pods are available almost anywhere, Starbucks Pods and Nescafe pods might be a little harder to find. Make sure to check out the availability of the pods before you make your purchase.

More than anything, I love the community and sharing what I know with others. I love to write about all things coffee, whether it's the art of espresso making or the finer points of cappuccinos or the difference between lungo and normale or rhapsodizing about my love of ristretto. For me, coffee truly is a life-long passion.
